At the beginning of 2022, Nunu Fine Art is going to bring a new series “ Maternal” from Maya Hewitt. Back in 2019, Maya took her newborn daughter Alva to Taiwan, holding the second solo exhibition in Taipei. As time goes by, Maya has her second child. During these three years, she put the idea of becoming a mother in this series, as she said, “being a mother changes me a lot, which is an inspirational thing, giving me the motivation and creativity. However, both the identities of artist and mother are expendable and selfless. I believe these two characters are as same as other identities. Hence, I also fall into endless challenges." Maya, who used to be self-willed, felt guilty at the beginning of being a mother, thinking that spending a few hours drawing would make her feel she was borrowing time from Alva to work.

This time, we particularly chose a studio photo as the key vision, which shows Maya holding her daughter, Alva, on her back, as two bodies are intertwined and inseparable. Maya said, “after being a mother, her body is as inseparable as an extension of Alva's body, and the physical changes generated by the role of mother, increasing the female feelings, as well as the dynamism and resilience. When love comes in full bloom, the emotion of the relationship between herself and her daughter plays the main role in life which makes the identity as an artist shaken from time to time.” Maya also mentioned that “this exhibition is about the emotional dissociation, complex and beautiful emotions that I have personally experienced in childhood and motherhood, also maintaining the raw feeling that I expressed in this series, I think it seems like a transition from one phase of your life to the next. It hypnotizes you into a state of wonder and exhaustion, staying in the immersive situation that makes me feel my identity as an artist is both motivated and hindered at the same time.”

In this series, whether it is storybooks, pictures, insects, cradles or childhood memories, all the fleeting moments are preserved in the works. It's like an intimate diary of Maya, hoping to touch others, stretches and wraps around like tendrils for a larger life story.
