Linji Huguo Chan Temple 臨濟護國禪寺

Sunday:08:30 - 11:30、13:00 - 17:00

Linji Huguo Chan Temple is near MRT Yuanshan Station.  With the Keelung River flowing by and the mountains in the distance, the atmosphere is quite tranquil.

Linji Huguo Chan Temple is a typical example of the Edo period architecture. Built in the Japanese colonial period, the Temple is a great work of wooden building as it is one of the first buildings of its kind constructed in that period. The old Sanmon (major gate), the Main Hall, Large Whetstone, Grave of its founder, and Stone Statues of Buddha all survive intact and hold historic value.

    Nice wooden temple

This is a beautiful Buddhist temple that was actually built by a Japanese monk in 1911, with traditional Japanese style architecture. It's right by the Yuanshan MRT station.

A spectacular wooden Main Hall surrounded by vulgar yellow-painted concrete buildings

Fifty meters from the MRT Yuanshan Station, just near by the Taipei Expo Park. Surrounded by modern concrete buildings, so is easily missed by the tourists. Built in 1911 during the Japanese colonized period, this temple is a branch of Japanese Rinzai Zen Buddhism. It remind me of my visit to the Linji Temple at Zhengding County in Hebei province (湖北正定) in 2007. It is the birth place of the Línjì school (臨濟宗, a school of Chan Buddhism established in 854 AD). The Linji school was later introduced to Japan and known as Rinzai. The main hall is a wooden temple with Chinese Northern and Southern Dynasties’ architectural style. It is now approved by the government as a Taipei City Heritage. The architecture is so spectacular. Unfortunately, the main gate and surrounding concrete wing buildings are painted with yellow and red. Dissonant and vulgar!!
