The Pingxi Old Street has an old-world atmosphere. Along both sides of the railway on the slanted hillside are traditional houses untouched by modernity. Nearby business are traditional grocery shops, drink stalls and fruit shops. You can see the local residents’ humble life. When the train passes by through the old street, a rumbling and thunderous sound is inescapable. A very famous Taiwanese commercial was shot here.

    Hot air lantern!!!

It is one of the things on our bucket list. Writing all our wishes on the 4 sides of a hot air lantern. Then release it into the sky. It is THE major attraction on the old street. Shops after shops selling the lanterns, providing Chinese writing brushes and ink for you to script your wishes. They will light the lantern for you. They will take pictures and video for you, the whole package cost NT300-400 depending on the style of lantern. Definitely worth the money. It takes about an hour to get there from Taipei City.

    Up in the sky

Pingci Old Street comes to life when the sky lanterns float up into the the sky. The lanterns are made of paper, and are propelled like a hot air balloon, by a wad of temple ghost money doused in kerosene. They make a spectacular sight. There's also souvenir stalls and snacks for sale.

Sky lantern activity without the crowd

In comparison to Shifen Old Street, this street has fewer tourists around so you can engage in the sky lantern activity with your family/friends comfortably since there will be sufficient space. As there seems to be quite a number of mosquitoes, you may wish to apply your mosquito repellant before visiting the area.

Old street with a lantern twist

It's not the best "old street" in Taipei by a long way, but it's the best one to visit! Why? This is the location for lantern lighting and watching - try arrive in the late afternoon while the sun is still up and hang around for an hour to watch the lanterns as the sun goes down. You can easily (and affordably) buy your own and write a message to send up into the skies as well. If you'd like to make it a day trip, do the Shifen Waterfall in the late morning/lunch time (warning: can be HOT!) and then walk up the hill to Pingxi afterwards.
