GREAT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY & CROWDS
While the tea exhibition center leaves a lot to the imagination, the intro to tea in Taiwan is interesting and the English is understandable. This center was recently remodeled(2014), and now offers a unique gift shop selling all things made of or connected with tea, at reasonable prices. They also have a tea house, where you can order a variety of local teas for your group to experience, all while sitting in a large open area with a good view of Taipei and 101. Unfortunately, they haven't figured out it would be a great night time experience, so is only open during the day. The real treat here though is the short hiking trail which goes up from the parking lot and circles around behind the exhibition center. This shaded, stepped trail ascends to a platform about 150 mtrs above the center, and offers some unique views of the city on the way up, as well as nice cooling breezes very welcome in the summer. The trail is mostly steps, with several observation platforms and benches, but is not strenuous. From the upper platform, the trail descends through different flora, and offers views of nearby tea plantations, before reaching the road about 200 mtrs from the parking lot, so it's an easy walk back(right) to your starting point. For the more adventurous there are other trails through the surrounding tea plantation area, which are shown on a map board along the road. Local mini bus 5 runs up and down for those who need public transport, and city bus 212 provides good connection from the bottom of Jiuzhuang Rd to the MRT line 2 Nangang station. In a car, you can reach the center in 30-40 minutes, and the whole visit can be done in an hour unless you decide to sit and drink some tea. As this is a little visited destination, you don't have to fight the crowds to get here, making it a great place to unwind and get some exercise at the end of the day. Several nearby tea manufacturers sell direct to the public, and there are also some restaurants in the area for light snacks or full meals. -
