The religious belief of “City God” has long been an established tradition amongst the Han people. The Xiahai City God Temple was built on Dihua Street in 1856, and for over 150 years it has been the religious center of the Dadaocheng area, and has witnessed the development of the area. It is believed that May 14th on the lunar calendar was the birthday of the City God, and the Xiahai Chenghuang Cultural Festival recreates the annual celebration and ritual with a traditional “King’s Banquet” and the evil-countering “Liang Huang Dharma Assembly”. In addition, theater performances, markets, exhibitions, workshops and guided tours are held, with all events taking place in the temple to help offer visitors a full cultural and historical experience of traditional Taipei.
