In the early years, merchants on Dihua Street became extremely wealthy through trade, so the houses they built were charming, a unique blend of Chinese and Western architecture. Their most distinctive feature is the extremely long and narrow shophouses, with the front used as shops and the back as factories or warehouses, reflecting the characteristics of early clustered street houses.
