Located near the Taipei Botanical Garden, the National Museum of History was founded in 1955—the first museum to open after the Nationalist Government (KMT) arrived in Taiwan in 1949.
Built in the traditional Chinese style, the museum has a tiered roof of green glazed tiles supported by red pillars. The ponds, pavilions, and gardens that surround the building add to its elegance.
The museum collections contain nearly 60,000 artifacts from ancient China and Taiwan, including painted pottery from the Neolithic Period, oracle bones from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, bronze ware, tri-colored pottery from the Tang Dynasty, stone Buddha statues, and works by Zhang Da-qian and Pu Xinyu. Some of the more famous items housed at the museum include a bronze dagger with a golden hilt from the Late Spring and Autumn period and a square vessel with a coiled dragon design and a bronze animal figurine from the Middle Spring and Autumn period. Aside from the special exhibit on the third floor, the National Museum of History also periodically displays items from other museums around the world. The variety of exhibits spanning the old and the new make the National Museum of History a favorite place for all lovers of art and history.
After checking out the exhibits, you can relax on the third floor lounge and look out over the botanical garden. The second and fourth floors have small cafes that offer snacks, teas, and coffee so you can take your time and spend a relaxing day at the museum.
