Ketagalan Culture Center
The Ketagalan Culture Center is located in Taipei’s Beitou District near Beitou Park. It is the first education and training center in Taiwan that focuses on Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. You may be wondering why this cultural center was built in an area famous for its hot springs—that’s because this used to be the home of the Ketagalan people over four hundred years ago. In fact, the name Beitou is an approximation of the Ketagalan word for witch.
The Ketagalan Culture Center opened in 2002 to preserve and teach residents about indigenous peoples’ traditional arts and culture. At the entrance sits a row of wooden stakes, each with its own fun expression, and holding hands to symbolize tribal harmony. The bright colors in the tiled flooring and unique wood and stone carvings fill the atmosphere with aboriginal flavor. The permanent exhibits describe the history and traditions of the Ketagalan people. Clothing, tools, and instruments are used to show the social classes, religious beliefs, history, and legends of the Ketagalan people.
Don’t forget to stop by the Ketagalan Culture Center the next time you go to the Beitou hot springs!
