Guandu Nature Park
Guandu Nature Park, located at the confluence of the Tamsui River and the Keelung River, has been a paradise for birdwatchers for a long time now. With a surface area of up to 50 hectares, and surrounded by nearly 250 hectares of Beitou rice fields, it not only serves as an ecological conservation area, but also has a regulatory effect on air quality in Taipei City. So, let’s take a few gentle steps into this emerald of the Taipei area!
Guandu Nature Park is about 10 kilometers from the mouth of the Tamsui River. Looking out into the distance, you can see the Keelung River on one side, and green rice fields on the other – with the broad horizons giving you the feeling of exuberance. These abundant wetlands nurture fiddler crabs, insects, mudskippers, and thousands of species of vibrant flora and fauna. There is also swampland, ponds, mudflats, trees, and abundant natural scenery – it’s as though the Greater Taipei Area were a biological paradise.
Every bird migratory season, this area becomes an important stopover habitat for birds, and has become an ideal spot for birdwatching. The writer Liu Keshiang has said: “Around the end of the 1970s, many birdwatchers began using this wetland as a sacred destination for birdwatching. Their favorite trip is to walk slowly along the Keelung River embankment to the upper waters of the river, then walk to Qilian Park, in the vicinity of the current MRT Qilian Station, and then return home. This is the typical route taken by those birdwatchers familiar with Guandu.”
Aside from birdwatching, you can also see little water buffaloes quietly chewing grass in Guandu Nature Park – they are the wetland conservation ambassadors! You can also wear what is known as “frog suit” swamp clothes and personally experience the pressure that waterfowl feel when walking in water. And fortunately, you can also see the lovely figures of black-winged stilt that have been successfully propagated in the park area!
Every day, a lot of fun activities take place in Guandu Nature Park, so come and become acquainted with this beautiful ecological environment!
