Dihua Street Post Office
If you want a taste of old Taipei, then come to Dihua Street in Dadaocheng!
For more than 100 years, this has been the wholesale and retail area for tea leaves, traditional Chinese medicine, north-south goods, and silk cloth. This bustling prosperity led to the creation of a lot of crafted townhouse-style store fronts. No matter if among buildings with southern Fujian-style architecture from Zhangzhou and Quanzhou, or the ornate baroque-decorated buildings, or on the old streets with the modern architectural exteriors featuring clean lines and emphasis on proportion , the Taipei Dihua Street post office sits almost unnoticed!
The history of the Dihua Street post office can be traced back to the establishment of the Taipei South Street post office in 1915. South Street refers to the section of today’s Dihua Street from the Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple to the intersection with Minsheng West Road. According to reports, Chiang Weishui, who was actively engaged in social movements at that time, often used this post office to send telegrams. In 1922, it was renamed the Yongle Town Post Office, because at that time, Dihua Street was known as Yongle Town. Later, it was renamed the Dihua Street post office.
Standing in front of the Dihua Street post office, you will easily see an old-fashioned Western-style building. The exterior and arcade have been renovated, and the simple stucco exterior walls emphasize the proportional lines and bright Western style – it retains the architectural style of the time. The high-ceilinged interior, written history on the wall and old yellowed photos, cannot help but make you think of the bustling elegance of the past 100 years.
A walk down to the Dihua Street post office, a visit to the nearby Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple and a taste of Taiwanese snacks in the Yongle Market will leave you with many memories of a time long ago!
