Futai Street Mansion
The Futai Mansion, with more than 100 years of history, is located on Yanping South Road, formerly Futai Street. Under the Japanese, the Taipei City wall and neighborhoods built during the Qing Dynasty era were demolished, and many commercial shops were built to connect to the bustling Dadaocheng commercial district. The Futai Street Mansion is one of the only remaining commercial buildings constructed during the period of Japanese rule. It is also known as Yamato-cho (Dahe Town) Mansion, and because stone building materials were used on the exterior, it is also known as the Stone House.
The thick stone construction is used on the exterior of the Futai Street Mansion, and the stone used to connect the arches is Guanyin Mountain stone from Qi-li-an. The roof is of a Massa style that was commonly seen in the Baroque era and there are dormer windows that open for ventilation. The elegant cloister has a four post-three room form, and looking up you can see the ceiling of the arcade, with a wood mosaic diamond pattern that has a classically elegant style. The overall construction is simple and elegant, but always reveals a meticulous taste. The exterior has a fully European style, but the wood construction used in the interior has a strong Japanese style – something that is particularly rare.
The stone walls and ceilings in the interior of the mansion are representative of the time, and of Taipei during the Qing Dynasty and Japanese periods. Using old maps of the time, we can compare and see the differences in Taipei’s neighborhoods now!
The Futai Street Mansion experienced a destructive fire, but has reopened as a mini museum. Static exhibits are held regularly, and neighborhood tours are also being planned. What are you waiting for? Hurry to experience the classical atmosphere of the Futai Street Mansion and you will come to know the history and elegance of the Taipei City of yesteryear!
