Chiang Wei-shui Memorial Park
Chiang Weishui Memorial Park commemorates the fighting spirit of Chiang Weishui in the modern national movement in Taiwan. Since his lifelong work is closely linked to Dadaocheng, the Chinhsi Park in Dadaocheng was renamed the Chiang Weishui Memorial Park.
In the beginning, Chiang Weishui practiced medicine in the Dadaocheng area, then during the Japanese era, he began campaigning. He led intellectuals involved in social movements, he founded Taiwan’s first all-Taiwan cultural organization, first Taiwanese newspaper, first political party, and first all-Taiwan trade union organization. Therefore, he is known as a mentor of citizen movements and as Taiwan’s Sun Yat-sen.
As you walk into the memorial park, in front you will see a statue of Chiang Weishui and his biography. The executive officer of the Chiang Weishui Cultural Foundation, Chiang Chao-gen, has said that: “the Chiang Weishui Memorial Park is located at the base of his anti-colonial movement, Dadaocheng. First, we see his statue, in one hand he’s carrying his medical bag, preparing to practice medicine in Taiwan, and in the other, the books he read in prison, which was his learning ground for politics. The books are covered by a blanket, indicating his determination to go to jail for the sake of Taiwan at any time.”
To the side, there is a Yushan (Jade Mountain)-shaped monument to the Taiwanese People’s Party. Chiang Chao-gen explains its origin as follows: “On August 26, 1925, Chiang Weishui published an article called “Drum and Bell”. He said he wanted to bring a drum to Xingao Mountain, which is today’s Yushan (Jade Mountain), and beat it to awaken the 3.6 million Taiwanese people, so that each would rise to work for Taiwan’s restoration.”
At the rear of the park is a memorial archway displaying Chiang Weishui’s biography and video commentaries. The exterior of the archway is an imitation of the Baroque style of Dadaocheng, and embedded on the exterior are his famous words: “Compatriots must unify, there is strength in solidarity”. These words fully transmit the unremitting Taiwanese spirit of his short life.
