Beitou Museum
The building housing the Beitou Museum, was built in 1921, and was "Jiashan Hot Springs Hotel" –the finest hotel in Beitou—during the Japanese colonial period. The building is located halfway up the hillside in Beitou, and occupies around 2,600 square meters; it is currently one of a very small number well-preserved wooden, two-story Japanese-style buildings in Taiwan.
The private Beitou Museum contains close to 5,000 folk artifacts and works of folk art that have been preserved and displayed here for over 30 years. Apart from the building, which is itself a historic site, the museum displays both permanent exhibits and occasional topical exhibits in its limited space. The museum also promotes the art of tea and the making of the Japanese sweets known as wagashi through hands-on extension activities.
In addition, the Yiranju Restaurant on the first floor offers exquisite, creative Kaiseki meals and afternoon tea. On the second floor, the large Japanese-style banquet room with a Taiwan Hinoki cypress stage can be used for banquets, conferences, and various performances. The gift shop by the entryway vestibule sells works highlighting Taiwan’s cultural creativity, as well as exquisite crafts from Japan, and the articles’ diverse and creative styles are all imbued with subtle taste.
In recent years, the Beitou Museum has pursued a composite business model involving ties to the cultural creativity industry. The museum hopes to use culture and art as its core values, and let visitors experience both Japanese-style architectural aesthetics and also the richness of Taiwan’s cultural diversity.
