Xingtian Temple
When we talk about the most visited temple in northern Taiwan, there’s no doubt that Xingtian Temple, which is visited by several million people every year, is the one.
Completed in 1968, the main deity worshiped in Xingtian Temple is Emperor Guan, who was the famous general Guan Yu of the Three Kingdoms period. He is greatly admired for his loyalty, integrity and noble ambition to save the world. His believers, therefore, address him as the "Benefactor" meaning the "Savior."
A famous service provided by Xingtian Temple is "recalling frightened souls." The widely praised ceremony to recall frightened souls is simple and efficacious, and gives believers a sense of tranquility. Many believers are moved by the fact that the volunteer—and elderly woman—who is in charge of recalling frightened souls works non-stop regardless of the weather. You will see many believers of all ages, accompanying each other and waiting patiently for their turn in the temple square.
As part of a movement to support environmental protection, believers do not need to prepare incense and offerings when they visit Xingtian Temple. Placing your palms together and bowing is the best offering you can present to the deity.
