The Red House
Around the end of the 1800s, Ximending was planned as a residential area for Japanese during Japanese era. In order to supply daily necessities to residents, Ximen Market was constructed in 1908. The Red House was the entrance to the market, which was the main shopping area for the Japanese living in Taipei, and was a very bustling place.

The Red House was transformed into a Chinese opera theater and a movie theater after the Nationalist government took over Taiwan, and gradually declined due to the shift in urban development to the east side of the city. Because it was the first official market in Taiwan, the Red House is now a municipal-designated historic site.

Adjacent to the Ximending pedestrian area, the Red House was transformed into a platform for art creativity, and reopened in 2002 after restoration. The Ximen Red House Tea Shop offers tea and snacks. In back, the 16 Workshops in the straight section of the cross-shaped building consist of several small workshops selling Taiwan-made products. The Ximen Red House Theater on the 2nd floor holds regular activities such as Chinese crosstalk, traditional opera, stage plays and concerts.

Art markets and autograph-signing events held by famous entertainers are often held on the square in front of the Red House, which makes the square a very exciting place and an emerging tourist attraction.
