MRT Street Dance Festival to Kick-off! Total Prizes Reach NT$760,000!

Street dancers and enthusiast! The 2019 MRT Street Dance Festival is taking place again! This year, the spokespersons of the annual competition include the celebrities Ben Wu and Kimberly. From today through July 7, those interested in participating in the street dance tournament can sign up at the event’s official website (https://www.metrotaipeidance.com.tw/). Furthermore, the organizers is also offering subsidies of as high as NT$200,000 to the champion team to take part in international competitions to confront street dance masters from around the world!

The renowned MRT Street Dance Competition is entering its 15th year. In the interest of linking up with the global street dance trend, the event has invited the local dance troupe “FORMOSA CREW” (the winner of major competitions such as BOTY and Asian Battleground competition) and “Mortal Combat” from Japan (frequent top winner at Japan Dance Delight World Final in Osaka) to perform on the day of the preliminaries. Jinjo Crew, the renowned street dance team from Korea which won top honors and five major global street dance competitions, will stage a performance on the day of the finals. A professional street dance workshop will also be organized to promote the sports of street dance.

Co-hosted by the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) and Cathay United Bank, the 2019 MRT Street Dance Competition is proud to announce two spokespersons for this year’s event: Ben Wu and Kimberley. We, who served as the goodwill ambassador for the2015 MRT Street Dance Competition, was also the president of the dance club at Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School during his school years. On the other hand, Kimberley has been trained in ballet and street dance since a young age, and was a member of the performance troupe staging the Disney Lion King tour in Australia at the age of 11. Her Facebook fan page has attracted over 1.7 million fans. The dual spokespersons attended the press conference on May 2 and will serve as a member of the jury during the finals.

On the day of the press conference, the members of Breaking Crew will demonstrate their dance skills at the event. Team members Winnie, KennyG, and Caesar all have shown dazzling records, having taken part in the WDSF competition in Japan and represented Chinese Taipei at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina last year.

This year’s MRT Street Dance Competition encompasses two categories – “Division A: Youth” and “Division B: Adult”. The preliminaries will take place on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. The finals are slated for Saturday, August 17. The 1st place winner of each division can bring home cash award of NT$160,000, while the 2nd place winner receives NT$100,000 and the 3rd place winner collects NT$50,000. There are also 3 teams who will receive NT$20,000 in reward for special mention. The remaining teams (4 in each division) who made it to the finals will also receive NT$2,500. In addition, the first place winners of this year’s tournament will also be eligible to apply for as much as NT$200,000 in subsidies to help fund their entry to international competition in the future.
