According to the Parks and Street Lights Office (PSLO) of the Public Works Department, the annual Shilin Residence Chrysanthemum Show is an eagerly anticipated event among the citizens, and it has evolved to become the preeminent chrysanthemum exhibition in Taiwan. At the conclusion of the chrysanthemum show each year, the staff begin to brainstorm and painstakingly plan for the following year’s exhibition. They pay particular attention to the decoration of the exhibition venue in hopes of offering tourists a novel experience every year. This year, chrysanthemum is combined with music to evoke everyone’s imagination. In addition to musical pleasure, floral landscaping and arrangements also create a unique visual impact that aims to reinforce people’s impression of the exhibition decoration. The multiflora chrysanthemum is the centerpiece of every year’s chrysanthemum show, as it embodies the exceptional horticultural skills of the nursery staff at the PSLO.
This year, the agency’s Floriculture Experiment Center unveiled the multiflora chrysanthemum entitled White Crane; featuring 2,042 flowers on a single plant, it has taken the office nearly 2 years of complete dedication to cultivate the work of art that is now on public display, hence everyone should take this opportunity to admire the one of a kind masterpiece.
According to Floriculture Experiment Center Director Sung Fu-Hua, the theme of the exhibition area revolves around the song “Come Home Soon”, written by Sodagreen lead singer Wu Ching-Feng, portraying the imagery of grandparents longing for the return of their grandchildren. The easy to understand lyrics depict simple yet extraordinary happiness. The overall decoration draws upon the theme of nostalgia, where images of a warm home are created through elements of the lyrics such as “a window of waiting”, “walls of time”, “wandering starlight”, and “home”. This is complemented by an assortment of colorful chrysanthemums, plants, and flowers belonging to the Asteraceae family, and foliage plants. In particular, the 9 adorable, unique sheds were handcrafted by the PSLO employees by the creative use of common horticultural elements such as twigs, leaves, plastic, ropes, abandoned flower pots, and wood. In the cold winter season, emotional sentiments can often be triggered by the picturesque scenery. How long has it been since you last took a stroll and chatted with your family? Everyone is welcome to bring their family here to appreciate chrysanthemum, listen to music, and enjoy the warmth of each other’s companionship.
Furthermore, the Floriculture Experiment Center also created a small landscape opposite the residence dining hall. Inspired by Jay Chou’s song “Qi-Li-Xiang”, the wonderful atmosphere of first love is presented through delightful images such as the pencil moving back and forth writing a poem, the constant chirping of sparrows, cats’ love for Pacific saury fish represents how much I love you, along with butterflies and vibrant ribbons. The large pencils are assembled from wood, plastic tubes, and ropes, so come on down to the show to take a look at the ingenuity of the art installations.
