With the relaxing of COVID Alert, the city saw an increase in traffic flow over the weekend. To ensure that neighborhoods are not affected by the unbearable noise of modified cars, the Taipei City Police Department (TCPD) is working with the Department of Environmental Protection to carry out the “Quiet City” Initiative, beginning with a joint inspection in the night of July 30.

During the inspection, the police stopped and checked 132 vehicles. Officers issued 5 citations to vehicles creating loud noises which disrupt the peace of the neighborhood. It also reported 6 cases involving driving without license and other traffic violations.

According to TCPD, roads in the vicinity of Yangmingshan see an increasing presence of modified cars and heavy motorcycles during late hours in the summer months. In anticipation of larger turnout of such vehicles after the relaxing of pandemic prevention measures, the police joined hands with DEP and motor vehicle authorities to crackdown on illegally modified vehicles and those that produce an excessive amount of noise.

In accordance with the Noise Control Act, vehicles which emits noise levels exceeding standards established by the law will face fines between NT$1,800 and NT$3,600 and be required to implement improvements within a period of time. In addition, those violating regulations by modifying headlights, installing high volume speakers, riding motorcycles without transmission case cover or exhaust pipes, or driving without license will be penalized accordingly.
