Enjoy the safest and the most romantic journey via the MRT on Chinese Valentine’s Day! The Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) thanked 744,000 passengers for taking the metro on August 14 (Saturday), which sets a new record in terms of passenger volume for holidays in the midst of the Level 3 COVID Alert.

Through the analysis of the global-renowned "Transit information management expert system (Metro TIMES)", the Bannan Line had approximately 223,000 passengers yesterday, which appeared at 22:21 with the highest capacity, From MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station to MRT Dingpu Station, with passenger load factor at roughly 44.2% (about 740 people). This shows accurately that couples take the MRT to travel during the day, and then take the MRT to go home safely at about 22 o'clock at night.
Crowds taking the MRT
As for the Wenhu Line, the holiday passenger load factor is about 61,000 passengers, with the peak of the two-way traffic in the afternoon falling at around 17:00. The highest passenger load factor of trains appeared at 17:15 from MRT Daan Station to MRT Nangang Exhibition Center Station and passengers who transfer to other lines, where the passenger load factor is about 36.49% (about 140 people). The peak at late night is around 21:00 to 22:00, in the direction of Neihu, which means that residents living in Neihu are traveling home.

The Metro TIMES system provide the traffic control center with real-time monitoring and enable staff to initiate station crowd flow limiting measures based on actual situations, thereby providing passengers with a more comfortable waiting and riding space on the MRT.

According to statistics from TRTC, since the de-escalation of COVID Alert to level 2 on July 27, the passenger volume has gradually risen and exceeded one million riders on August 2. Additionally, the holiday passenger load factor has reached a new high on August 14, and the average daily passenger load factor in August has picked up slowly to 940,000. Compared with the average daily passenger load factor before the pandemic (which was roughly 2.16 million passengers in 2019), the latest number is about 44% of the passenger load factor before this wave of the pandemic.

Working in line with the Central and Taipei City Government's relaxing of measures starting July 27, TRTC will continue to maintain pre-pandemic level service intervals and maximum capacity during peak hours. Inter-zone train services will resume during off-peak hours and holidays, and the number of services will be adjusted flexibly depending on the crowd. TRTC urges public and private enterprises and organizations to continue to implementing pandemic prevention mechanisms such as flexible hours and off-site office mechanisms, so that employees can avoid the peak hours of 07:30-09:30 and 17:00-19:00 on weekdays.

TRTC has also repeatedly reminded passengers to wear face masks before entering MRT stations (including ticket offices, station halls and other areas), Zhongshan Metro Mall and East Metro Mall. Violators will be fined between NTD 3,000 to NTD 15,000. Passengers are encouraged to use registered electronic tickets while taking the MRT. They should use MRT automatic ticket vending machines once to add value to EasyCards or buy one-way tickets. This helps to reduce human-to-human contact and strengthens pandemic prevention efforts.
