Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the Taipei Technology Cup Love Earth Charity Road Run Event on April 17. During his speech, he noted that the city government is currently experimenting with the concept of seniors’ foresight sports centers. It hopes to achieve the vision of at least one small-size fitness facility for each borough, allowing a dedicated environment and courses designed specifically for elders.

The mayor remarked that road runs have been immensely popular with the public over the past years. This can be seen from how fast the entries for Taipei Marathon get filled up, despite openings for 28,000 participants.

However, the major challenge to road runs is the administrative support required for closing off roads for the event. That is why Taipei City Government limits the number of such events in Taipei to 10 annually. Following the 2017 Universiade in Taipei, there has been a significant growth in the popularity of sports event. The city government continues to explore options to create a better sports environment for everyone from young people to senior citizens.

Ko noted that today’s road run is the collaboration among the Neihu Technology Park Development Association and several tech companies in the park. A total of 2,800 running enthusiasts have registered for the event. He admitted that he is surprised to find Deputy Mayor Huang Shan-shan showing up early to run the 10-kilometer race and completed the challenge with the time of 1 hour and 17 minutes.

He also took the opportunity to promote the 2022 Manufacturing and Service Industry Census to the companies at the technology park. Conducted by the Department of Budget, Accounting and Statistics since March, Ko called upon businesses to work with the city government. There is also an information counter at booth A24 at the fair today, allowing businesses to acquire more details on the census.
