To enhance the competitiveness of Taipei City through strengthening the aesthetic appreciation of its populace, the “Taipei Art Park – Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) Extension Project” is a major cultural facility construction project to be undertaken by the city government.
The origin of the project goes back to 2014 when Mayor Ko Wen-je pledged to build a new museum as a part of his cultural policies. The project has been awarded on May 20 to the team comprising Ricky Liu & Associates Architects + Planners and Fortune Construction Corporation.
TFAM was established in 1983 as the first contemporary arts museum in Taiwan. The institution will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year. However, in light of the rapid development in the contemporary art scene and the heated competition among domestic and foreign art museums, an upgrade of the museum infrastructure is necessary to resolve issues such as a lack in exhibition space and capacity limits to provide better education and public services.
The plan seeks to build upon the existing infrastructure of Taipei Expo Park TFAM area, with construction area spanning 62,542 square meters and total floor area of 44,576 square meters. The extension will include an underground structure beneath the park, making it the first among Taiwan museums. The interconnected subterranean edifice will merge with surrounding park landscape to realize the design concept of “art within forest: seeing trees while appreciating art.”
The new museum extension will feature a venue for new media and cross-domain showcases. The merging of manmade structure with green space offers the public a place to experience art while enjoying nature. The total budget allocated to the project is roughly NT$5.2 billion, with the turnkey project cost being NT$4.4 billion.
The completion date of the TFAM extension is slated for 2027.
