During his address, Chiang pointed out that the Taiwan Lantern Festival had its origins in Taipei 34 years ago. Starting 2001, municipalities across Taiwan took turns hosting the event. In 2023, the Taiwan Lantern Festival returned to its city of birth after 23 years.

To celebrate the milestone, the venue of this year’s event extends from East District to Xinyi District. The organizers also integrate top-notch digital technology, implement smart guide system and interactive activities, and partner with various stores and businesses in the neighborhood. Furthermore, separate lantern display areas have been set up across all 12 administrative districts. The festival literally lights up the entire Taipei City, highlighting the spirit of “Taipei exceeding Taipei once again.”

The mayor remarked that this year’s festival began with trial operations on February 1. The 19-day-long event went on smoothly, thanks to preparation carried out over the past two years. He expressed his gratitude to former Mayor Ko Wen-je and the central government for their help, as well as the sponsors, execution teams, artists, and performers for playing key roles to make the event a success.

Chiang also mentioned that the large-scale event required the full effort from over 8,000 city staff members, 10,000 volunteers, 2,000 volunteer traffic police, 20,000 police officers, 5,000 sanitation workers, and 1,000 medical and disaster prevention personnel.

At the end of his speech, the mayor thanked visitors from Taiwan and abroad for their participation and support. He also expressed his best wishes to Mayor Huang of Tainan, whose city will host the Taiwan Lantern Festival in 2024.
