The mayor noted that he is really happy to see so many athletes showing enthusiasm for dragon boat racing. Even though this is the first time for him to take part in the competition, he is excited and ready to start rowing. The mayor believes that the experience will be unforgettable and that he will form a team and take part in the competition again next year.

According to the mayor, the total amount of prize money for this year’s tournament exceeds NT$3 million. There are 5,100 athletes from 210 teams vying for the top honor. He pointed out that there are many participants who began practicing before the sun is out and continue to practice even at home. Hopefully, the spectators will witness top performances by athletes over the 3-day competition lasting from June 22 through 24.

Chiang pointed out that in addition to the dragon boat race, there is also a fair going on at the tournament venue. Visitors can find fun activities such as family cosplay contest and egg-standing challenges. He also took the opportunity to thank a number of foreign representatives for attending the opening ceremony and expressed his gratitude to city staff for their efforts in organizing the event.

Responding to media questions about training and preparation undertaken by city hall’s dragon boat team, the mayor remarked that he himself maintains workout schedule and has been practicing with his colleagues ahead of the tournament. He would also like to thank the members from the Fire Department for teaching him tricks on how to better control the boat. As for why he’s wearing sandals, Chiang remarked that it is easier for him to remove when boarding the vessel.
