As spring turns to summer, a remarkable group of floral stars has quietly come into bloom at Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence in Taipei City. From a distance, they resemble elegant lilies or stately irises; only upon closer inspection does one realize that these surprising showstoppers are the familiar hemerocallis, commonly known as daylilies. Challenging the public's usual impression of daylilies as simple flowers in a single tone, the varieties featured in this display offer not only large blossoms but also rich and varied layers of color, bringing a fresh new look to the garden landscape.

Daylilies are herbaceous perennials belonging to the genus Hemerocallis. Depending on the growing environment and variety, they can be divided into highland and lowland types. The varieties displayed at Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence are lowland types, suitable for cultivation in flat areas and at elevations below 400 meters, with strong adaptability and high ornamental value. Their blooming season is concentrated mainly from April to June each year, a time of mild weather and abundant blossoms that also makes it an ideal season for residents to go out and enjoy the flowers.

Notably, the daylilies in this exhibition do not come from a single source. Rather, they are the result of long-term observation and cultivation by staff of the Horticulture Management Division. By recording differences among daylily lines in flower color, flower form, and growth characteristics, and then carrying out artificial pollination, the team successfully raised seedlings that developed into diverse and highly ornamental daylilies. These improved and selectively bred daylilies display brilliant shades ranging from orange-yellow and pale pink to even bi-color gradients, while also presenting rich variation in petal shape and texture, fully demonstrating the innovative results of horticultural hybridization.

Although each daylily blossom has the characteristic of being a one-day flower, blooming for only a single day before fading, each inflorescence contains many buds that open in succession, allowing the overall flowering period to last for about 20 days. In addition, among the many cultivated lines, some daylilies possess a light and refreshing fragrance, adding an olfactory dimension to the visual feast and making the overall flower-viewing experience more vivid and richly layered.

Visitors from all walks of life are sincerely invited to visit Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence during the blooming season, step into this colorful world of daylilies, and experience the beauty and surprise of nature in these brief yet dazzling moments of bloom.
