Taipei in the ROC’s 100th Year

Yours to Celebrate, Yours to Discover

In Chinese, the character for“100”indicates both a number and the idea of “completeness”

and “plenty.” It is used in many common terms, with “hundred names” (百姓) meaning the common people,“hundred trades”(百業) meaning the business world in general, and “hundred goods” (百貨) meaning general merchandise. In the Chinese world, numbers are powerful symbols, and in this year, the centennial of the Republic of China's founding, we will explore Taipei's significance in the 100 years. We take you on an MRT tour of a century of architecture, explore century-old practitioners of age-old crafts, enjoy beloved traditional foods, and go on day-trips hunting down the traces of the Taipei of yesteryear. Taipei is a place with a young face but many old-world charms, and in this issue, we show you where to find them.

Taipei is always a place of great buzz, especially in March and April this year because of the climactic events before the closing of the Taipei International Flora Exposition. Whether you embark on a single visit or multiple visits during this period, you are promised something new, and whether it's the myriad cultural-arts performances or the final-curtain shows, excitement and satisfaction are guaranteed, as are lifetime memories.

Springtime and art seem to be made for each other, and though you may not know it yet,

you are destined for a number of rendezvous with the works of such illustrious names as Chagall, Monet, and Balzac. Taipei has shows going on celebrating all three, with original manuscripts, paintings, and other treasures on loan from museums and private collections around the world, and everyone is waiting for you.

Let's head out now to celebrate the 100th year of the Republic of China together, exploring

the wonderful recipe of old and new, traditional and modern that gives Taipei such a strong

personality.
