    Return to old Shanghai

This luxurious restaurant can be found in the heart of the Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in downtown Taipei. The cuisine is old-style Shanghai food. Many wealthy Shanghai business people followed the Nationalist government to Taiwan, bringing their their food tastes with them. This is one of the best Shanghai restaurants in Taipei, it is well worth a visit.

Prestige dining at one of Taipei's best hotels

When the Nationalists retreated to Taiwan, many wealthy businessmen from Shanghai accompanied them. Dining at the Shanghai Pavilion is about prestige, wealthy people are prepared to pay for fine food to impress their guests. By the way, do not insist on paying the bill if you are invited to dine at the Shanghai Pavilion, it is the height of bad manners. Worse still, do not attempt to split the bill. Accept your host's hospitality graciously and return the favor at some later date.

Pay for the view, not the cuisine

Many influential people have come from Shanghai but Shanghai cuisine is not very popular. In my opinion, you would get a better view and a better meal at the Marco Polo, in the same hotel.

    Chinese New Year visit

On Chinese New Year we celebrated. The Shanghai cuisine was great with a wide variety of dishes. The prices were high but service was good.

    Not worth it.

Not worth the money. Poor service and mediocre food for the money. Definitely not up to Shangri-La service standards.
