Once an elementary school during the Japanese Occupation, and later a Taipei Municipal Government office building, the Museum of Contemporary Art is the first reused historic site in Taiwan. Now the only museum exhibiting contemporary art in Taipei, the museum integrates art, history, and technology to advance the development of contemporary art.
At first glance, this red brick and black tile building with tall, slender windows looks like something straight out of a history book. Inside, the modern feel of the brightly decorated lobby gives an impression of the future. The exhibition halls lie at the end of a brick archway; along the way you can admire the contrast between the modern art and the aged building. The museum offers tours and various workshops for you to commune with art in your own way.
The east and west buildings of the Museum of Contemporary Art also serve as art classrooms for Jian Cheng Junior High School—a rare joint cooperation between school and museum anywhere in the world. The museum initiated the redevelopment of Datong District, and now many arts events, novelty stores, and coffee shops have taken root in the area. This also extends to the nearby Taipei Confucian Temple and Dalongdong Bao-an Temple, making this a perfect destinaton for a day of unique cultural experiences.
