Asia Art Center is thrilled to present the Taiwan debut solo exhibition of Japanese artist Hime, featuring 11 new artworks.

These new works are born from color images of flowers, much like an ancient Japanese proverb from the Edo period: “Standing as elegant as peonies, sitting as alluring as peonies, and walking as graceful as lilies” (立てば芍薬、座れば牡丹、歩く姿は百合の花). This proverb depicts women standing with grace akin to peonies, sitting with charm resembling peonies, and walking with the elegance of lilies. To Hime, girls dressed in vibrant and colorful outfits appear like blossoming flowers. In this exhibition, he names each artwork after various seasonal flowers, while the viewers surrounding his paintings resemble bees swarming around the flowers.

Moyoco Anno (安野モヨコ) is a manga artist whom Hime admires. Her works typically revolve around the thoughts and perspectives of the young generation, often combining fashion trends to create an avant-garde atmosphere. Hime drew inspiration from her manga “Flower and Bee” (花とみつばち), which gave birth to the theme of this exhibition, “ABEILLE” (French for “bee”).

Hime (ヒメ)

Hime was born in Osaka, Japan in 1986. From 2004 to 2007, he studied in the Comic Art Course at the Faculty of Manga, Kyoto Seika University. In 2008, Hime entered the fashion industry and embarked on his journey as a fashion photographer. In 2013, he moved to the United States for foreign brand shoots and returned to Tokyo the following year. Starting from 2019, he also pursued a freelance career as a digital illustrator, including clothing prints, music album covers, live performance and pop-up event posters.

In late 2020, Hime painted his first artwork using acrylic on canvas, which was exhibited at artKYOTO, marking the beginning of his artist career. His works mainly feature women with an 80s aesthetic and have garnered widespread attention, making him a highly acclaimed artist.
