The dual solo exhibition of Uwe KOWSKI (b.1963-) and Kai SCHIEMENZ (b.1966-) will be held in AKI Gallery, half a decade since they last visited Taiwan. The title of the exhibition “Order and Chaos” intends to explore the intricate interrelationship between the works of two artists, or to be more specific, rationality and sensibility. Their works not only delve into the profoundness of natural media but also toy with the interplay of the external environment.

Uwe KOWSKI was born in Leipzig. Trained in traditional painting techniques, he explores the possibilities of painting across the spectrum of abstraction and figuration. His creations often explode like fireworks and splash captivating multi-layered colors all over the canvas. KOWSKI sees painting as a transformative means through which he could showcase the possibilities of polysemy rather than mere narration. His creative form implies dialogues and provides one with varying inspiration through the historical context associated with Impressionism and Jasper Johns behind his oeuvre. KOWSKI's creations incorporate the bold strokes and boundless compositions of Impressionism. The way he explores the light and shadow in the process of painting is similar to the core of Jasper Johns's creations, directly translating sketches into works, and subverting the convention of Western art.

Kai SCHIEMENZ currently lives in Berlin. He is known for his artistry of employing glass and ceramics as the main media for his oeuvre, attempting to integrate crafting, design, and art. The transparent material property of glass enables light to pass through; meanwhile, the smooth outer surface as well as the internal marks left during the shaping process makes every piece of his work customized. SCHIEMENZ believes that architecture signifies social culture. He portrays urban landscapes in an abstract yet subtle approach, probing the relationship between city, space, and buildings. To his belief, pure rationality can only be achieved with calm, reasonable, and investigative logical thinking.

The artists' inner experience is often expressed through art, which is built between rationality and sensibility. Kai SCHIEMENZ's works seem to be rational, complete, and neat. In fact, the artist enjoys the sporadic nature of the glass-modeling process, during which infinite surprises are to be uncovered every moment; Uwe KOWSKI finds the harmony between order and chaos, jumping out of the rational creation methods, and conveys the “essence of life” in abstract expressions. The conflicting composition of “Order and Chaos” has always been the core of the artist's works constantly evolving around and eventually shaping their unique style.
