〝A Hunger Artist〞expounds the inevitable and the inexorable vicissitudes of life in a nearly poetic language: the story depicts the image of a hunger artist, who so utterly dedicated to fasting that he locks himself in a cage and denies himself anything else in life. Such self-imprisonment, both physically and mentally, has brought him short-lived fame and polarized debates over his performance, or claimed-to-be art. As the story unfolds, the hunger artist’s mindset is also slowly being converted...
Young Taiwanese artists resemble the main character in the story, hunger for a stage to show their full capabilities, and to be truly understood by the audience.
In the context of the diverse development of contemporary art, young artists are accumulating creative energy, finding their own artistic language through experimentation and exploration, and hope to convey their stories via art.
Surviving & Living:
The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche believes the ultimate distinction from animals is that humans first have the desire to pursue the great yet non-human animals lack intelligent purposefulness. Nevertheless, this elusive pursuit for ideal of human-beings also urge Icarus to fly chasing the sun under excruciating pain and had his wings burnt. This exhibition aims to dive into the primitive desire of human beings and the self-transcendence driven by such hunger through the unfolding story of each creator in a spatial context.
Dilemmas & Challenges:
With the rampant capitalism, the urge for pursuing the great has been watered down by the indulgement within the instant joy brought by material enjoyment. The satire and criticism of secular society in the novel also ridicule that in today's society, the public rarely intend to truly understand the artists‘ creative connotation, but rather devouring the image and label each work in a hasty attempt. In the context of the contemporary art nowadays with the diverse development, everyone can claim to be an artist, yet only a few can stay hunger despite the great sacrifice, and fulfill their true artisitc vision.
