As spring comes to an end, blooming cherry blossoms can now be witnessed at locations within Taipei! Visitors can enjoy the beautiful sight at the linear park area between MRT Zhishan Station and MRT Qilian Station.
According to the Parks and Street Lights Office (PSLO), cherry blossom is the district flower of Beitou District. The linear park between the two MRT stations is home to over 200 Fuji cherry blossom trees. The entire section comprising pink blooms is the result of years of collaboration between PSLO and Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation.
PSLO pointed out that there are at least two types of cherry blossoms which are often referred to as Fuji Cherry. One of them is actually Taiwan cherry blossom, which is found at locations such as Pingjing Street in Yangmingshan, Tamsui’s Tianyuan Temple, Neihu LOHAS Park, and New Garden Town in Xindian. The bloom period of Taiwan cherry blossom lasts from the end of January to early February.
The other type is Showa Sakura, which could be found at places such as Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, Sansheng Hiking Trail in Sanzhi, and Miaoyin Buddhist Temple in Miaoli. This kind of cherry blossom blooms in late spring – typically from the end of March through early April.
According to captain Hu of PSLO’s Horticultural Engineering Team, due to the irregular cold fronts between January and March, the cherry blossom blooms this year at the Linear Park is more vibrant compared to the past two years. For those who want to catch a glimpse of Mother Nature’s masterwork, a trip to the Linear Park section between Dongyang Street and MRT Shipai Station is highly recommended.
