On October 6, Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the press conference announcing the 2022 Open House Taipei. During the event period between November 12 and 13, participants will have a chance to visit destinations which are usually not open to the public, including Yuanshan Hotel Escape Tunnel, Beitou Train Workshop, Taipei Urban Intelligence Center, and more.

The mayor pointed out that this is the third year for the city to hold the event. During the first year, only about ten locations took part in the open house activity. In the second year, the number of participating venues increased to approximately 50 sites. This year, the list has grown to over 100 facilities.

According to Ko, a city comprises of multiple buildings. The important thing is that every individual building has its own unique story. He cited the former residence of Chang Hsueh-liang in Beitou District as an example, pointing out that each site contains its own life and story. Hoping that the event will attract more residents to explore and learn the stories, Ko mentioned that some of the sites will no longer be available the next year, such as the construction tunnels of the new MRT line will be buried in cement as work proceeds. Other interesting places include the Taipei Performing Arts Center, Taipei 101, Taipei Music Center, Taipei Water Museum, and Guanyinshan Reservoir.

Mayor Ko also mentioned that urban planning may yield unexpected surprises once in a while, citing the changes to Chifeng Street following the establishment of a direct trail linking MRT Zhongshan Station and MRT Yuanshan Station. Chifeng Street, which was formerly known for its smithies, is now populated by shops offering handicraft products. The city government hopes to replicate the success by creating another “corridor” extending from Taipei Railway Station all the way to Xinbeitou.

Citing spots such as the backstage of Taipei Performing Arts Center and the highly sensitive MRT Operations Control Center, Mayor Ko touted the open house event as an opportunity for participants to visit places where they might never get to see in their life.
