Do you know that according to data from the Ministry of Culture’s Bureau of Cultural Heritage, there are a total of 193 monuments and 323 historical buildings in Taipei City, compared to 1,031 monuments and 1,702 historical buildings across Taiwan? How many of them do you know, and how many have you visited? What is the purpose for conservation and maintenance of these historical heritages?
YDFE to Hold Seminar on Historical Architecture Appreciation
For the upcoming Grand Exploration Expert Seminar taking place at the Youth Development and Family Education Center (YDFE), the organizer has invited cultural tour guide Yao Chi-chung to share his knowledge on Taiwan’s historical buildings and traditional architecture craftsmanship with the audience. The seminar will take place at 2:30 PM on Saturday, April 22.

With the continued development and expansion of Han Chinese settlements over the past 400 years, numerous buildings with Fujian and Guangdong architectural characteristics have dotted the island – from temples to residences to fortified establishments to memorial archways. Many of these architectural works are collaboration among craftsmen from various domains, whether woodworks, masonry, clay sculpture, papercraft, or painted pottery. These buildings contain interesting details that help observers learn more about the importance of the conservation and protection of cultural heritages.

As a founding member of Taipei City Old Fashion Historical Monument Association, Yao is an expert in Taiwanese historical architecture and cultural heritage education. He has participated in several important evaluation committees for historical monument conservation, including the ones reviewing Mailiao Kongfan Temple and Kinmen County’s Wuqiu Island Lighthouse.

To sign up for the seminar “Taiwan Historical Architecture and Traditional Craftsmanship Appreciation,” please visit the YDFE’s Chinese website [Link] or call the center at (02) 2351-4078.
