The time is here again to ring in the New Year! The good news is that with the relaxing of pandemic prevention measures in the latter half of the year, life is gradually returning to normal for many people. Taking advantage of this trend, several large-scale activities are making a comeback. One of these is the New Year’s Eve Countdown Party.

So where are great places to go if you want a good view of the spectacular fireworks show heralding in the New Year? A top choice recommended by the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) is no other than the Xiangshan (Elephant Mountain)! The lookout with a breathtaking view of the tallest building in Taiwan is easily accessible from downtown Taipei.

In addition, the journey up to the platform is relatively easy hike for most people, thanks to the internationally-renowned trail. The numerous platforms and scenic viewpoints along the way offer a great view of the Taipei Basin and Taipei 101.

This year, the GEO has completed works on the brand-new “Diamond Landscape Platform”. The facility boasts pubic artworks including a diamond-pattern tile decoration and a heart/elephant-shaped bench. Also, the nearby Hushan (Tiger Mountain) Peak, Baoshan (Leopard Mountain) Peak, and Jiuwu (Ninety-Five) Peak Hiking Trail also boast ideal locations to enjoy the fireworks and other iconic views.

GEO reminds those planning to visit the aforementioned sites to arrive early on New Year’s Eve, as traffic control measures will take effect in the vicinity due to the Countdown Party in Xinyi District. Visitors taking the MRT can disembark at MRT Xiangshan Station and follow the directions from Exit 2 to the trail entrance. There is also a YouBike Rental Station at Xiangshan Park for those utilizing the shared bicycle.
