Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the opening ceremony for the Ching-kuo Chi-hai Cultural Park and Chiang Ching-kuo Presidential Library on January 22.
During his address, he remarked that he is honored to attend the opening ceremony of the Chi-hai Cultural Park and is happy to see that the facility is finally opening its doors to the public after seven years of renovation and preparation.
The mayor pointed out that Chiang Ching-kuo accomplished many things during his term in office, including the implementation of the Ten Major Construction Projects, lifting of the marshal law, removal of the ban on newspapers and political parties, and allowing veterans to visit their relatives in Mainland China. He played a key role in the island’s democratization process.
Since Chi-hai Residence is the only home of the former president in Taiwan that is fully-preserved, Taipei City Government proclaimed the edifice a city-designated historical monument in 2006. As it began restoration works, the city government also looked into the possibility of transforming the vicinity into a cultural park, with the building at its center.
During former mayor Hau Lung-bin’s administration, the ambitious project was made possible through a successful public-private-partnership initiative involving the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Christian Faith and Love Foundation, and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange.
The cultural park will allow visitors to know more about former president Chiang’s simple lifestyle, while the relics and documents in the Chiang Ching-kuo Presidential Library’s collection provide researchers with a valuable source of information.
Dignitaries taking part in the opening ceremony include President Tsai, former president Ma, former mayor Hau, Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange president Fredrick Chen, representative of donators Cher Wang, and representative of the deceased president’s family Chiang Yo-sung.
