With the arrival of summer, rhinoceros beetles are expected to reappear at Nangang Shanshuilu Eco Park. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) invites the public to take advantage of the Dragon Boat Festival long weekend to visit the park to check out the blooming lotus flowers and find rhinoceros beetles in the wilds.

Due to their short life span, the agency also reminds visitors not to capture rhinoceros beetles to ensure these amazing denizens will continue to appear year after year at the park.
The rhinoceros beetle resembles the helmet worn by Japanese samurai. This characteristic attracts the attention of kids. The breeding season of rhinoceros beetles usually falls between the months of June and July. The grove of Formosan ash trees at Shanshuilu Eco Park is both a habitat and breeding ground for the beetles.
According to DEP, the presence of rhinoceros beetles at the Shanshuilu Eco Park demonstrates the success of the agency in revitalizing the local ecosystem. The beetles also provide kids with an ideal material for learning about nature and help them develop perspectives on protecting the environment. The agency pointed out that as important indicators, the presence of the rhinoceros beetles testify to the state of the surrounding environment’s health.
The agency also mentioned that this is the season for blooming lotus flowers at the park. It encourages the public to visit the park before the weather gets too hot. In addition to the flowers and beetles, the Shanshuilu Eco Park also houses a special experimental zone showcasing energy creation and storage devices. Visitors will have a chance to learn techniques on saving power and reducing carbon emission.
