09:00~10:00 The Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Presidential Residence
TheConverted in 1950 from a horticultural lab, the former residence of Chiang Kai-shek features a Cajeput-shaded path that leads to Mrs. Chiang’s favorite rose garden: a popular wedding photo locale frequented by newlyweds seeking an ideal spot for a memorable shoot. Not far away, an array of orchid and other flowers are displayed in a greenhouse and a landscaped lab.
10:30~11:30 The Lin Yutang House
The Lin Yutang HouseBorn in 1895, Lin Yutang achieved fame for his English-language articles. The house was completed in 1966 as a Chinese-style, four-walled courtyard with a Spanish twist. While it features a comprehensive collection of Lin’s manuscripts, books and even his English typewriter, a restaurant on the premises serves Lin’s favorite Fujian dishes.
12:00~13:00 The Yangming Academy
This 2-story summer residence of Chiang Kai-shek comprises living, dining and office facilities on the first floor, private spaces on the second, a secret underground pathway decorated exactly as it was when Chiang was alive, and a hardly spoiled ecological system inhabited by abundant wildlife.
13:30~15:00 The Marshal Zen Garden (former residence of General Zhang Xue-liang) & The Taiwan Folk Arts Museum
The Taiwan Folk Arts MuseumBuilt in 1984, the scenic Marshal Zen Garden was where Japanese colonial officers were entertained and where General Zhang Xue-liang was held under house arrest. Currently it is a restaurant with tea-tasting and hot tub facilities.
15:30~16:30 The Plum Garden
The Plum GardenThe Plum Garden, built on the hillside in late 1930s, was calligrapher Yu You-ren’s half-Western, half-Japanese summer residence with a basement shelter and war-scarred walls. It was restored as an exhibition venue and visitor information center. Admission is free.
17:00~19:00 Tianmu Shopping District
The exotic streets in Tianmu Shopping Area, which occupies a section of Zhongshan N. Rd., Tianmu E. Rd. and Zhongcheng Rd., are attributed to the long-removed U.S. military presence as much as to the American and Japanese Schools, both still standing. Tianmu offers various shopping experiences for both vintage clothing hunters and modern fashionistas, offering unique boutiques in the small alleys to posh department stores.
